• Proofreading: Nobody is perfect, and even well-written manuscripts can contain errors in grammar, spelling and clarity. I will edit your document thoroughly for these mistakes and other inconsistencies, and I will suggest minor changes to improve clarity without substantively changing the content. Proofreading services for a typical 5,000-word document will take approximately 3 to 5 hours.
  • Copyediting: I will correct spelling, grammar, usage and punctuation. I also will check cross-references and ensure consistency and accuracy across your document. Depending on the work needed, I might make simple notations about things you might want to address or I might revise the text, annotating these changes to call them to your attention. Copyediting services for a typical 5,000-word document will take approximately 5 to 7 hours.
  • Line editing: Documents often require structure and language updates to improve the style of the text. I will review your document for spelling, word choice and language errors and will suggest updates to improve clarity and flow. I have extensive experience editing work written by authors whose primary language is not English and can suggest broad rewrites to help improve the overall quality of the work. A line edit on a typical 5,000-word document will take approximately 6 to 9 hours.
  • Developmental editing: If your project needs more than a full language edit, consider asking me to perform a developmental edit. I will assess the structure and clarity of your document, provide edits and comments where necessary, highlight the strengths of your work and identify issues that need addressing. A developmental edit on a typical 5,000-word document will take approximately 15 hours, give or take an hour or two.

I hold myself to the highest professional and ethical standards in my work, abiding by the codes of the various editorial associations of which I am a member. Some of those include the following:

My rates are generally consistent with the rate guidelines published by the Editorial Freelancers Association but will vary depending on the type of work required for the project and its specific deadlines and other complicating factors.

In my experience, an hourly rate is best for both the editor and client, as it allows for a more fair representation of the amount of work involved. If you’d like, I will provide in advance an estimate of how long I expect the work to take and, thus, how much you can expect it to cost based on the rate we’ve determined.

I also will sign clients on a per-page or per-word basis, but those arrangements are best, as the EFA recommends, for jobs “with few, if any, unknowns.” If you would like a fixed project fee, please share sample pages and be as specific as possible regarding the work required.

  1. Reach out to me at and explain what you’d like me to do (see the list of services above). The more clear you can be in your description the better. If you’re not sure what you need, however, I would be happy to share with you an estimate of the type and length of work required.
  2. Email me your document (in Microsoft Word format, if possible). I will look it over and respond to you within 48 hours with a quote for the work. You will be under no obligation to accept the quote. If you would like, I will edit up to 500 words of your document to provide an overview of my editing style. Just let me know.
  3. Want to move forward? Just let me know. I’ll send you a simple contract with the terms of our agreement.
  4. All edits will be conducted in Microsoft Word via the track changes function. This tool allows you to accept or reject each change. I will annotate the document with comments where clarity is needed or where major changes have been made.
  5. Unless other arrangements have been made, payment is due on completion of the document via an invoice I will send you. Included with the invoice will be a link via which you may pay online with a credit or debit card.

All documents and correspondence are confidential, and I will not share them with any third party. If you’d like, I will sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding your work.
